Family’s quiet grief

Intimate scenes marked the day: Queen Sonja and King Haakon shared consoling embraces, Queen Mette-Marit wiped away tears, and Sonja paused alone before the coffin, placing a red rose. Princess Märtha Louise, her husband Durek Verrett and their daughters were present, as was Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, who appeared visibly moved. Later, the family acknowledged supporters from the palace balcony.

Illness and long reign

King Harald died on Aug. 28 after several years of health issues. He had been hospitalized on Aug. 17 with side effects from ongoing medical treatments; the palace later reported he received antibiotics for a bloodstream bacterial infection. Harald reigned for 35 years after becoming king in 1991.
