A Royal Transition

King Harald V, born Feb. 21, 1937, died peacefully on Aug. 28 at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet. He acceded to the throne on Jan. 17, 1991, and was consecrated with Queen Sonja on June 23, 1991. The monarchy, rooted in the House of Glücksburg since 1905, now passes to his only son, Haakon.

The New King and Queen

King Haakon, born July 20, 1973, served in the Navy and studied at Berkeley and LSE. He married Mette-Marit in 2001; she became queen consort when he succeeded. Mette-Marit has faced health challenges, revealing pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 and undergoing a lung transplant in June 2026.

Heirs and the Next Generation

Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Haakon’s elder child, is next in line and noted for her interest in environmental issues. Her brother Prince Sverre Magnus is third in line and studying abroad. Their positions follow long royal traditions and recent changes to succession law.
