Jacques Cartier sourced the emerald in Baghdad; the original stone was split in two, one half ultimately becoming the focal gem for Wallis’s ring after Edward acquired it.
The couple married June 3, 1937, at Chateau de Cande with fewer than 20 guests. In 1958 Wallis had Cartier modernize the ring with yellow gold and extra diamonds. On April 3, 1987, the ring sold at Sotheby’s Geneva for $1.98 million, part of a collection that raised over $50 million for the Pasteur Institute.
